Yesterday I ventured on an art project I’ve been ruminating over for some time. I had a stack of ticket stubs; mostly old Providence games mixed in with a few concerts and art shows. I’ve always wanted to do something with them, so I finally did. Yesterday I took the stubs, a canvas, some Decoupage mixed with orange paint and created this for my bedroom.

I’m really pleased with it. I think I used too much paint in the decoupage but overall I’m really happy with how it came out.
The faded tickets collaged under the paint and glue reminded me of one of my favorite artists: Jasper Johns.
So folks, here is your ten cents art history lesson. Jasper Johns is an American painter who is best known for his painting, Three Flags. He is considered a Pop Artist as his paintings usually used popular images such as flags, targets and maps of the United States.

What I like about his paintings is that they are incredibly textural. For example, the red, white and blue flags above look rigid and flat on one level, but the various tones of reds and whites within the paint make the painting have movement. I love art work that has dualities like that, work that makes you think or feel one thing and then another. He was also known to use collage underneath the paintings, which you can faintly see in person under the layers of his paint.

Happy to see that there is a BC ticket in the middle of the whole thing.
It was a basketball game, in which PC beat BC. I think it was the last Big East game we played against them.
