Teacher Blues

New school years bring so many things. Stylish back to school clothes, shiny school supplies and fresh beginnings. But for most teachers back to school also brings on bad dreams.

While a fresh start after a long vacation is always nice-- a new school year also brings on a lot of anxiety! A new set of students might bring a new set of headaches! Headaches that don't go away for 9 months! Especially for a kindergarten teacher: I keep looking at my roster, learning their names and wondering what each little personality will bring.

So with these emotions come dreams! I've had two nightmares this week. The first was about a former, very challenging student I had; I dreamed he was in my class again. My other dream was my classic lost-my-contacts-can't-see-and-can't-get-to-work dream.

Most people have experienced working with a new boss. Each September as I meet 40 or more parents who are nervous about their child's first school experience and are basing that experience solely on my hard work and teaching capabilities. It's like reporting to 40 new bosses.

Think of August as one long Sunday for teachers.

A Sunday during football season? That would make August the greatest month ever. I'd never leave the house.
