Winners and Sinners

Friday night I watched one of my typical artsy-type movies: The Namesake. It was slow in the beginning but once the different parts of the story came together the movie moved along and was really good. It is about a family from India living in the New York. The parents had an arranged marriage, the husband was a student in the United States so they moved there and started a family. The main story is about the lead character, Gorgol/Nikhil, and how he learns the meaning of how he got his two names. It is an interesting look at how second generation children struggle to merge their American life style with their family culture and practices.
Saturday night I went to see a movie that was the total opposite of what I usually see, the new flick by Kevin Smith: Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Jer, The Saltuses and I grabbed dinner at Cambridge 1 and then headed to the movie. While it was totally raunchy and I'd like to turn my nose up and say I didn't like it, I found myself laughing out loud. It is what it is, so if you liked Super Bad and Pineapple Express, you'll like this one too.

On a nerdy note, I watched a bit of a special on Fractals on PBS. It was really interesting and talked about how math and artistic work go hand and hand. I also learned that Benoit Mandelbrot, the man who "discovered' and coined the term Fractals was one of the original mathematicians at IBM!

The movie pales in comparison to the book. Everyone I know (men and women) have cried after reading it. One of the best books I've read in the last 10 years, for sure!
