While on The Cayman Islands, the girls and I had a discussion on irrational fears.
KB has a strong aversion to sharks. Even while in the bays of Cape Cod she has a heightened awareness while in the water; fearing that a shark will swoop up and take a bite out of her.
Chrissy has a strong fear of airplane landings: she is afraid that the landing mechanisms will fail and the plane won't come to a halt.
I have a more traditional fear of spiders. I hate the critters and will more likely ignore them in my classroom rather than squash it myself.
Also on vacation, Chrissy was noting my relaxed nature around marine life. I didn't mind having fish swimming around me (even after being bitten) and was the only one pumped to swim with the stingrays. Chrissy was wondering why someone who was once quoted as saying, "I hate nature" while clam digging at the Cape, could be so at peace with aquatic life.
While thinking about it, the crab that totally freaked me out while clamming and subsequently had my clamoring back for the boat, was a SPIDER crab. It was black, with long legs and really looked like a gigantic spider.
So there, for the record I don't hate nature: I just have an irrational fear of spiders!

I too once said I hate nature while I was on the Cape! Unfortunately I was sitting on the deck swatting at mosquitos when I said it. No one ever lets me forget those words now.
