As part of our study on place, I engaged my students families in a fun project. We read a book called
The Giant Hug. In the story the main character, Owen, sends his grandmother a hug through the mail. Through the story we watch as the hug travels through the U.S. Postal service from Pennsylvania all the way to California. Owen starts by hugging his own postman, who has to hug the man who loads the mail into the truck, who has to hug someone at the airport and so on. The hug travels through each post office official until the grandmother’s own postman hugs her.
My students made their own blank hugs. To help our class learn about our world in a new way, I had the parents send the hug to different friends or family around the country. I asked the hosts to decorate the hug in anyway that represents where they live or even take pictures with the hug around town.
Some of the hugs have made their way back. A grandmother from Palm Springs and a cousin from Emerson, California did a really great job! Here are some of the pictures around town:

I'm not sure who's enjoying it more, me or the kids!

I want to send a hug! ;)
Well, we're just learning about the United States for now! But maybe next year I can ask for a an expat hug!
Sween-dawg! Glad to see that you've come around and are "embracing" hugs.
The post title was totally a shout out to you Pat! I should have named it Ode to Pat!
