Spin, Spun, Done?

Attention: Kind of a Grey's Anatomy spoiler for those of you abroad and a season behind. (But not really)

The recent news that there will be a Grey's Anatomy spin off series led us to a debate.

KB said that spin offs are never successful, the only spin off that did well was Frasier (Cheers). Of course there were the failures like Joey (Friends) and Joanie Loves Chachi (Happy Days) but Kathy, KB's friend, and I then spewed off a number of other spin offs that DID do well:

And with some googling I remembered Happy Days spun off into Lavern and Shirley as well as Mork and Mindy! AND with even more researching I remembered that The Simpsons actually originated as short cartoons on The Tracey Ullman show!

So Good Luck Addison! Hopefully McSteamy will join her in the new show!

I'm pretty sure that "Angel" can count as a successful spin-off from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", being that it lasted five seasons...

Over here, we have a program called Casualty, which is basically a British ER. That has a spin off called Holby City which is very popular.

Not sure about Successful/Flops, but me and Jo have thought of several:

There are the CSI's - Original CSI set in Las Vegas, then on to Miami with a crossover episode, then to New York with another... I've not seen any of the NY ones yet.

Of course, you've got your Star Trek stuff, from the original series, to Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, the "prequel" series, plus movies and whatever else...

You've got all the different Law & Order series to boot, not that I've seen any of them. I think there might be two or three? Special Unit and Victim Unit or something?

Stargate the Movie created Stargate SG1, then Stargate Atlantis.

Hercules The Legendary Journeys gave us the Xena Warrior Princess stuff, as well as Young Hercules.

And I think I will finish with Power Rangers. I mean, HOW many of those are there?! hehe

I'm with Dan, I was dying to mention Angel. I don't really get Addison's popularity though. Maybe she does something in season 3 that makes her more appealing and I'm just not there yet.

And, prey tell, what were your thoughts on Thursday nights episode? I think we knew it was going to happen, didn't we...

But I think to REALLY shake things up they should have done what they were threatening to do...

I hope you're not asking me Alan - my TV is for Jaysens PC2, and Tam's Cbeebies. And for collecting dust :D

Alan: Are you guys caught up now on seasons? Or watching them online? I actually was only half interested and actually started this post as I was watching the show! I thought Thursdays ep. was stupid, obviously they wouldn't kill her off otherwise they'd have to rename the show! I don't like when real shows try to do fantasy things like that, but it was interesting she ran into her mother on the 'other side'.

Dan: I thought of the CSI's et. all but didn't think they fully counted since they have an entire new cast and the same fomula. I feel a real spin off has an entirely different plot!
