If you're the artsy movie type then I recommend renting Brick, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (he's such a cutie, I have such a thing for the tall awkward type!)

This high school film follows the film noire structure including odd-ball characters with very smart and quick paced dialogue. It reminded me of the 1940's detective thrillers a la Humphrey Bogart! It's a low budget film but I found that it paced fairly well and had interesting camera angles and visuals. The characters were likeable and multidimensional and the plot kept me guessing and entertained until the very end.
